How to Style your Summer Pieces for Fall

The weather went from summer to fall REAL quick in the city so it’s about that time to start transitioning your closet. Before you pack away all of your summer favorites, I wanted to share a few of the pieces you should keep in the rotation through fall and how to style them. I’m someone who gets very attached to the pieces I love so I always try to find ways to make them work for as many seasons as possible. Continue below to find out which items to hold onto and styling tips to make them fall perfection.

1. SLIP DRESSES

Slip dresses are one of my favorite pieces so it’s no surprise I try to hold onto them year-round. To take this summer staple into fall, it’s all about outerwear and layering. By layering a chunky sweater or sweatshirt over it, you can create a faux slip skirt look and pair with strappy heels or booties. Another favorite way to fallify a slip dress is with a turtleneck top or bodysuit (great for more fitted slip dresses so you can avoid the lines from the top showing through.) You can keep it classic with a black turtleneck or go printed if your slip is solid. For those days when the weather is all over the place, opt to wear with a moto leather jacket or oversized blazer so you have the option to take on or off as the temperature fluctuates throughout the day.

2. DISTRESSED JEANS

When we think of fall, we tend to think of dark wash and black denim, but those aren’t the only options. Light wash, distressed jeans transition perfectly into fall, specifically a good boyfriend or straight-leg fit. To style these jeans, it’s all about pairing with your favorite fall pieces, like mock neck tops, flannels, structured leather jackets (love Restyled Vintage for affordable vintage options!), bomber jackets, etc. You also want to skew the color scheme more fall so choose darker colors (i.e. browns, navy, maroon, tans, deep jewel tones) and of course, animal print is always welcome.

3. BIKE SHORTS

While shorts tend to be one of the few items that remain a summer exclusive in my closet, bike shorts are too comfy to confine to just one season. For fall wear, I suggest bike shorts that are slightly longer and hit an inch or two above the knee or knee-length if you’re on the taller side. To balance the exposure of the shorts, anything you wear at the top should be long sleeve and a relaxed or oversized fit. This can range from a crisp, button-up and oversized blazer to a hoodie borrowed from bae and jean jacket. For shoes, you can keep it casual with crew socks and chunky kicks or amp up the fall vibes with combat or knee-high boots.
