5 Sweater Vest Outfit Ideas For Fall
The sweater vest trend doesn’t seems to be slowing down anytime soon so I wanted to share some easy ways to try out the trend this fall. My favorite thing about sweater vests is that you can keep it classic with a neutral colorway or go retro with a bold, funky print. They also come in a bunch of different silhouettes, from cropped and boxy to long and relaxed. Continue below for 5 simple sweater vest looks perfect for the season and product recs to shop the trend.
1.Neutral Monochromatic
Nothing screams chic more than a head-to-toe neutral look, especially in fall. To achieve this look, opt for a sweater vest in your preferred neutral (think cream, tan, camel, or chocolate brown) and pair with trousers in a shade of that same neutral. Finish the outfit with accessories in a dark color for an ensemble that effortlessly transitions from day to night.
2. With Tailored Trousers
A sweater vest is the perfect layering piece to spice up a simple button-up and trousers combo. With this outfit, style a plain white-button-up with a pair of black or neutral colored trousers and pumps. By keeping the base of the outfit solid, you have more room to play with the print of your vest. If you want a more polished look, opt for a classic houndstooth or checkered sweater vest. If you’re feeling more bold, choose a bright retro-feel pattern.
3. With a Printed Midi Dress
Sweater vests are the perfect hack for transitioning some of your favorite summer dresses into fall. For the sake of not freezing, choose a dress that is midi or maxi length and has sleeves. I prefer a flowy number like this one, but a more structured shirt dress would also work! For the sweater vest, you can go cropped or long, but you want the fit to be loose enough that the dress underneath won’t bunch up. Finish the look with chunky boots or sleek, knee-high boots.
4. With an Oversized Button-Up
Oversized button-ups are a year-round favorite but they hit different when layered with a sweater vest. Since this look requires a shirt that hits at least mid-thigh, I recommend using an oversized mini shirt dress or a button-up from the men’s section (and a pair of short shorts to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions!) The sweater vest length should be around low hip and the fit should be relaxed enough that the shirt underneath doesn’t bunch up. To complete the look, pair with a cute pair of knee-high boots.
5. With a Printed Button-Up
If you look at most sweater vest style inspiration, a white button-up is the end all, be all, but that is absolutely NOT the case. When I think of sweater vests I think of fun, bold prints a la That 70s Show and what better way to style a print than with another print?! If mixing a printed button-up with a printed vest, keep the rest of the outfit simple. This combo would look amazing with straight-leg jeans, black trousers or leather leggings. Mixing prints is also a great way to brighten up the gloominess that often comes with colder weather. (p.s. If you love this look, but mixing prints feels like A LOT, I did a post sharing tips on mixing prints that makes it a way less stressful ordeal. Check it out here).
