Before venturing out and trying different versions, I think it’s best to kick off your shirt dress collection with a classic style (i.e. button-front, midi/knee-length, solid/striped.) As a piece that’s flattering, comfortable, and looks super polished, it’s no surprise shirt dresses are a regular in Megan’s style rotation. Like Megan, I recommend styling for work with close-toed pumps and one or two simple pieces of jewelry.

Shirt dresses are my go-to solution for those days when I have after-work plans and want to look appropriate for both work and play. With a shirt dress, you get to keep the look more conservative in the office à la Megan, but can quickly spice it up before you head out to happy hour or date night. All of these looks are styled for off-duty but can be easily made work-appropriate with more buttoning up and swapping out the strappy sandals for pumps or flats.

Though fabulous worn solo, shirt dresses also look amazing styled with pants. For this look, choose a midi shirt dress and pair with cropped denim or wide-leg trousers. You can leave the bottom half undone like these ladies or wear as a shirt jacket, fully unbuttoned with a tank or fitted tee underneath. This is a great layering trick to continue getting wears through the colder months.
