Be Like Dennis
So I finally finished up The Last Dance and I still can’t get over the evolution of Dennis Rodman’s aesthetic. I remember growing up with headlines about his wild antics and fashion moments but I was too young to fully stan for the drama of it all! The only rule in fashion is that there are NO rules and few embody that motto more than Dennis Rodman. Scroll below for the 5 lessons we can all take away from the Rodman School of Style.
1. Say Yes to Accessories
While you may not need to wear the hat and the pearls and the shades AND the scarf all at the same time, accessories are key to leveling up any look. Rodman could always be spotted with a dope pair of shades or a funky hat that only he could pull off. Choose an accessory category to play with and make it your specialty.
2. A Little Skin Never Hurt Nobody
I am a huge advocate of showing a little skin, no matter the skin you’re in. Fashion is meant to be fun and liberating so I’m excited anytime someone tiptoes out of their comfort zone. Rodman loved any moment to show off his torso so that meant crop tops, unbuttoned blouses and some mesh moments. Pick an area of your body you adore and challenge yourself to show it off a little more. (Also, HOW, can we get short shorts reinstated in the NBA?!?)
3. Casual Doesn't Mean Boring
While a look THIS tame from Rodman was a rarity, he proves that dressing down doesn’t mean the outfit has to be a snooze. A simple t-shirt and jeans look can easily be upgraded with a killer jacket or by adding fun accessories (see: colored shades, shell necklaces and leopard print belt.) These days, casual looks are a lifestyle so next time you’re doing a quick grocery run, add some razzle dazzle to your chill fit by throwing on an outerwear piece or shoes you’ve missed wearing.
4. Wear More Things That Feel Good
By this, I mean wear clothes that feel good to your spirit as well as fabrics that literally feel good on your body. If there’s anything quarantine has instilled in me, it’s the value of comfort in how we dress. Rodman loved a silky top and a fly fur, but if extra isn’t your M.O. there’s comfort in basics like a super-soft cotton tee, a satin slip dress or a velvet anything.
5. Don't Be Afraid To Stand Out
From his eclectic personality and style to his undeniable skills on the court, there isn’t a single arena where Dennis Rodman didn’t stand out. I love that despite starting his career fitting into the league’s clean-cut aesthetic, he made a sharp left and never looked back. From the tattoos and piercings to the ever-changing hair color, Rodman unapologetically created his own lane. It’s a timely reminder that blending in is overrated and remaining true to yourself will always trump trying to conform to what’s expected. Go forth and PLAY, y’all!
